EBRF Statement on Reports of Potential U.S.–Eritrea Rapprochement

The Eritrean Blue Revolution Front (EBRF) issues the following statement in response to recent reporting by The Wall Street Journal regarding a potential easing of relations between the United States and Eritrea. These developments must be understood in their proper context.

EBRF asserts that it maintains significant support among key stakeholders within the U.S. government. In recent years, increased U.S. engagement with EBRF and growing attention to the possibility of a democratic transition in Eritrea have, in EBRF’s view, intensified pressure on the government of President Isaias Afwerki.

According to EBRF, this pressure prompted President Afwerki—whose government has historically adopted an adversarial posture toward Western governments, including the United States—to initiate direct outreach to U.S. officials, including representatives of the Trump Administration in 2025. EBRF maintains that these efforts did not result in substantive progress.

In subsequent public remarks, President Afwerki acknowledged the lack of success of this outreach and suggested that opposition from EBRF and its advocates in Washington contributed to the outcome.

More recently, EBRF points to reports indicating that President Afwerki has sought assistance from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el‑Sisi to engage U.S. decision‑makers, as referenced in The Wall Street Journal. EBRF characterizes this development as a departure from past practice, noting that the Eritrean government has not previously relied on third‑party foreign leaders to advocate on its behalf in Washington.

EBRF interprets these actions as a sign of increased pressure on the current Eritrean leadership and argues that its international engagement has altered the strategic environment surrounding Eritrea. The organization contends that this moment represents heightened stakes for all parties involved.

EBRF states that it continues to maintain active relationships in Washington, D.C., and that it believes there remains broad opposition within the U.S. government to the policies and leadership of President Afwerki. EBRF further affirms that it is engaged with U.S. officials and taking steps to respond to recent diplomatic developments.
